On Tuesday 19 December, the 100,000th Vespa scooter to be assembled in 2006 came off the production lines. An impressive result that had not been achieved for 16 years previously, the production milestone reflects the outstanding success of one of Italy's most celebrated brands. The Vespa success story is no less important in terms of charity, the Piaggio Group has decided to mark the Vespa's 60th anniversary by donating one Euro to the AISM - Italian multiple sclerosis association for each Vespa sold in 2006 and 2007.

  USA: Scooter Company Signs Condom Deal

  The marketer of Italian motor scooters has co-marketing deals with Starbucks and Church Dwight Co.'s Trojan condom brand. The Starbucks promotion launches late this month, with 3,000-plus stores in the U.S. and Canada displaying posters and brochures featuring the scooter, as well as a co-branded sweepstakes. Prizes include a trip to Italy and Vespa products, said Giancarlo Fantapple, president of Piaggio USA, which markets Vespa. Karlitz Co., an independent New York events outfit, brought Starbucks together with Vespa's agency, DePlano Group, also based in New York. The agencies collaborated on print and online ads in The New York Times and on the newspaper's Web site, said Marco DePlano, president and creative director at DePlano...

  ITALY: Piaggio Powers Cagiva

  Italian papers are reporting that the Cagiva Raptor (similar to Ducati Monster) will soon be using the Piaggio V twin engine in place of the Suzuki sourced motors currently supplied. A prototype with the 850cc engine has been undergoing extensive testing in Italy since about mid February. A "family" of motors in a variety of displacements are planned in the near future.

  Honda has produced a Valentino Rossi replica X8R scooter? This model is a 50cc 2-stroke being sold in Europe with logos of all the sponsors that helped Rossi win this years 500cc World Grand Prix Championship. Very trick indeed.    
  USA: Puff Daddy Scooter Mayhem

  Miami: Sean Combs, alias Puff Daddy and former boyfriend of Jennifer Lopez was arrested after making an illegal lane change on his motor scooter along Ocean Drive, Miami Beach. Police charged Sean with driving on a suspended licence. If he takes the rap he faces a fine up to $500 US or time in the pen. Sean was acquitted of bribery and weapon charges last month, which stemmed from a New York nightclub shooting. In March he was caught speeding his 1999 Bentley along Ocean Boulevard on the suspended licence, he was not arrested.    
  India: Scooters Uncool!

  Bombay: Bajaj Auto, India's leading motor scooter maker has recorded a significant sales fall for the October-December quarter, down just under %10 from the previous year. Interestingly, motorcycles are perceived cool and scooters unfashionable - a trend not expected to change (in India). The desire for more expensive motorcycles, have pushed sales and profits up at Hero Honda which will launch two new bikes soon. Bajaj have plans for four new models, including an interpretation of a Harley-Davidson chopper and cheaper scooters for the budget minded.
